Response provided by Zinc Nacional in October 2025: environmental position previously shared with the media

Regarding the recent inquiries from The Guardian and Quinto Elemento, as part of a new report on air quality in the Monterrey Metropolitan Area, we would like to share the following information with our clients, partners, and the public:

  • We have responded to information requests with technical rigor, providing verified data supported by current regulations.
  • The investigation is based on the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (RETC), a public database that uses estimates in accordance with NOM-165-SEMARNAT-2013. It is important to clarify that:
    • The data reported by Zinc Nacional are calculated using emission factors defined by the federal authority, not actual measurements.
    • These calculations do not reflect the mitigation technologies or the capture and environmental control systems we have implemented in our operations.
    • RETC information is referential in nature, based on voluntary self-reporting, and does not include thousands of state and local sources. Furthermore, it is published with a one- to two-year delay.

We emphasize that our industrial process represents an internationally recognized model of circular economy. The recycling of steel mill by-products prevents improper disposal of materials and reduces mining activity. For every ton recycled, the extraction of two tons of zinc ore is avoided.

At Zinc Nacional, we operate with specialized Waelz technology, considered the best available worldwide. This same technology is used in countries such as Germany, South Korea, Turkey, and the United States, meeting the highest technical and environmental standards.

The environmental authorities have publicly acknowledged our commitment to comply with the proposed remediation plan, as well as the significant progress already achieved in coordination with the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection.

At Zinc Nacional we maintain open dialogue with authorities, neighbors, clients, and collaborators. We strongly reaffirm our commitment to transparency, legal compliance, and the continuous improvement of our processes. We call for all disclosure and evaluation efforts to be based on verified data, properly contextualized, and contributing to the development of solutions grounded in best practices and evidence.
